The following pictures were taken during a trip to Egypt for the December 2004 OPEC ministerial meeting in Cairo.  All pictures taken with a Treo 600 camera/PDA-phone.

Bab az-Zuweila (southern gate in the medieval walls of old Cairo, urban growth hundreds of years ago places it in the heart of the old city)

Mosque of as-Salih Tala'ia (just south of Bab az-Zuweila)

Qayt Bay Mosque and Funerary Complex (the pinnacle of Islamic architecture; 15th century Mameluke period)

Al-Azhar Mosque (1,000 year old seat of Islamic learning and world's oldest operating university)

Beit as-Suhaymi (350 year old traditional wealthy traders' house just south of the northern walls of the medieval city, beautifully restored, see http://www.arabfund.org/suhaymi/ or go to the Eternal Egypt website for more info)

Reviving the art of traditional Islamic woodwork (showcase of the work of one of the craftsmen who helped restore Beit as-Suhaymi, found just across the alley, he has done work in five star hotels throughout the region and even exported to the US and Europe -- I believe his name is Asad Khalil, but I have to go doublecheck the card I picked up)

Khan al-Khalili (tourist and craft bazaar)

Contemporary Scenes (Nile views from the hotel, people lined up to try out for "Sooberstar" the officially-franchised Arab version of "American Idol", a shot inside the OPEC press conference)
